Today, they're just fine, since my mom and dad came from the two former rival villages. They were prob thinking "who are these foreigners," the same way Muhajirs were treated in Pakistan. I think those native Sikhs were just kind of watching out for themselves. In my moms native village, everyone has the same last name and are basically distant cousins (hence the Punjabi taboo on marrying within village), and that allowed their pind to be more lively. They could never do proper Jaago for weddings, and girls had to be super careful. My dad also said that his village kind of sucked, since there was no village spirit since everyone came from all over and weren't actually related like in other villages. Eh, I'm happy my dad had to struggle a bit with less land since that's what pushed him to educate himself. Yup, our family occupied a Muslim village as well, but we lost BIG time in Pakistan (since we had actually developed a bunch of free land in Pakistan). I wish we could all just have lived peacefully, I really miss the other 3 rivers of PUNJ-ab. I'm not sure if I woud have liked the alternative though, because even if India is not a saint, Punjab and Sikhs would be much worse off in Pakistan.
